Arrival

Okay, so I have a place. & A hotel room in the city, Stuff, a place I need to be on Monday and a car arriving shortly.

What I don't have in a sense of direction, a sense of place or any food.

The place is a nice 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom flat, in an older suburb of Brisbane, an 8 minute train ride and a 5 minute walk out of the city. The hotel room is one given to me by the ATO which I now promptly have to give up, having found a place. No "I have a hotel room" pick up lines for me on my first day. Granted, there is the possibility that the response would be "Really? I have one too!" And then things would just get awkward the morning after.

"So, look I have an early meeting"

"We have to be at work at the same time."

"Okay, well I'll see you around afterwards."

"You sure will, my room is right next door."

Urg. No relationships with work colleges. Irresponsible trysts aside, it is nice to have a home. People and personal belongings displaced by the flood (Amazingly, my house was unaffected and the train station I use as well as my building have been cleaned up.) aren't so lucky. If you've already donated to the flood appeal, good on you, cause I can only imagine the difficulties people must be going through. I do know one other graduate, who is in Canberra, whose belongings will not be received until Tuesday because of a backlog of Brisbane deliveries. And here's me not really unpacking anything surrounded by rubbish and toilet paper.

SO MUCH TOILET PAPER. I'm building a fortress.

I did live on my own for quite a long period of time. So it's taking some time to adjust back to making my own company. Granted I'm an introvert, but that still doesn't mean it's still not hard. The one thing that is making it hard is the fact that it still feels like a holiday, but I am now a Queensland resident, first this means filling out a lot of forms, trying to tell everybody who has my address that I am somewhere else. There's a lot, and even people who fine me if I don't tell them. Seriously, this AEC mob, why do they think they are so important?

I don't know the geography of Brisbane. I don't know suburb names, it's hard to have somewhere feel like home when you don't know much about it. I keep walking around the city and although landmarks are beginning to look familiar and I keep seeing the same street names over and over again, but getting maps in my head is not an easy process. And I don't want to get over reliant on a GPS, I'd just seem stupid. However, I have found  a couple of places to walk to, and in the process found out how brilliant 7-11's are.

But anyway, just a little short distraction whilst I should be unpacking. Relative gets here tomorrow to inspire me to unpack and make sure I get in on time to my first couple of days. Wish me luck. That probably means my fortress has to come down :(

Well, this was shorter than I thought it was going to be, good bye.
